/RSS and Content Syndication News Articles/ - LANHAM, MD, April 08, 2008 - Local professor and biological researcher, Lawrence Roberge, contributed to the recently published Encyclopedia of Catholic Social Science and Social Policy. Professor Lawrence Roberge, 48, contributed to topics on Biological Weapons, Chemical Weapons, Cloning, Condoms, and Abortion Vaccines.
With more than 800 topics from over 300 contributors, Encyclopedia of Catholic Social Thought, Social Science, and Social Policy (Scarecrow Press, 2007) is a comprehensive introduction to the Catholic vision of society, social relations, and the human being. It combines theoretical work on important topics and scholarly disciplines (e.g., economics, moral theology, natural law, philosophy, psychology); social science perspectives on a variety of topics (e.g., alcoholism and drug abuse, forgiveness and mercy, globalization); and treatment of practical policy implications that flow from applying the Catholic religious, moral, and intellectual tradition to contemporary issues (e.g., abortion, assisted suicide, immigration policy, school choice, torture).
The book reflects a broad range of Catholic thought that is international in scope, but with an emphasis on the American situation. Its interdisciplinary approach offers insights from a variety of perspectives: theological, philosophical, historical, economical, sociological, political, psychological, and legal. The work will appeal to individuals who want a clear and accurate introduction to Catholic social thought and a Catholic-informed social science and social policy. One certainly need not be a devotee and advocate for Catholic social thinking to find this encyclopedia of good use as a handy reference tool.
"When the opportunity to contribute to such an important encyclopedia came up, I knew I wanted to cover such critical issues as biological weapons, cloning, chemical weapons, and abortion technologies." states Professor Roberge. Roberge states in each topic a brief history of the issue, the moral and ethical issues about the topic, and the topic is concluded with the basics of what the Catholic Church teaches. "It was a challenge to deal with the technological issues that I know so well, and yet at the same time, follow up with research on how Church teaching is related to these issues." Roberge concludes that some topics such as cloning, biological weapons and chemical weapons are going to be paramount concerns in the 21st Century. "Hence, it will be necessary for reference texts like the encyclopedia to be available to provide information to guide the minds of young and old alike!"
The encyclopedia was edited by Dr. Michael L. Coulter, Professor of Political Science and Humanities at Grove City College, Dr. Stephen M. Krason, Professor of Political Science and Legal Studies and Director of the Political Science Program at Franciscan University of Steubenville, Professor. Richard S. Myers, Professor of Law at Ave Maria School of Law, and Dr. Joseph A. Varacalli Professor of Sociology and Director of the Center for Catholic Studies at Nassau Community College-S.U.N.Y.
Professor Roberge is an adjunct professor for South University Online (Savannah, GA) and for Florida Community College Online (Jacksonville, FL). He was the 2005 recipient of the CASE/Carnegie Foundation Professor of the Year award. He is presently completing his doctoral studies in Biology at Atlantic International University with his focus on the development of the next generation of Biological Weapons. He is a member of the World Future Society, American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), New York Academy of Science, and the Center for Bioethics and Human Dignity.
